A board with 24 inputs, 6 output and a temperature sensor with great features. It can be used as expander for all Area SX master boards (SX3000, SX15-Evo, SX18), but it can also operate in stand alone mode, with the powerful on board processor (PIC16F628). And it is not all! With the ER400TRS radio frequency transmitter the SX16B can be used also as wireless satellite.
New version SX16B!
A new version of the SX16 board. Fully compatible with the previuos version, both in mechanical and electrical characteristics, the new SX16B has two great features: the first one is the possibility to drive load up to 48V/2V; the second one is the presence of an output connector that allows you to chain several board on the same cable. In this way you can build the system you need.
General description
The SX16B board (click on the image to enlarge)
The SX16B board is conceived as natural extension of SX3000 (see article SX3000: l'hardware indispensabile per il modulo RCM3700), SX15-Evo (see article SX15-Evo - Even more power and flexibility!) ed SX18 (see article SX18 - FOX: the board for your Linux projects now!), but can be used also in stand alone mode.
On board we can find:
- 24 digital inputs:
- 8 direct inputs with TTL level (0V-5V)
- 8 filtered inputs (CLC filter) with TTL level (0V-5V)
- 8 optoisolated inputs where you can connect voltages up to 24V CC; they can be setup also as TTL inputs (0V-5V)
- 6 rele outputs that can drive loads up to 48V/2A
- 1 digital temperature sensor (DS1621)
- PIC16F628 (option)
- RF ricetransmitter ER400TRS (option)
- 3 leds: a power led, an RF data led and a led tied to PIC for general pourpose use
- input and output connectors for FLEX-Bus: allows a direct connection to the master board, to other SX16B boards or to FLEX serie board.
The SX16B shares with SX15-Evo the same dimensions (160mmx100mm) and the mechanical holes; this layout allows you to fix it on top of SX15-Evo. But SX16B can be hosted also in a DIN Rail enclosure (9 modules).
Hardware details
The board features can be grouped in:
- Output rele 48V/2A
This section of the boards hosts the output rele. Each output rele is tied to an header connector with three pins: a common pin, a normally open pin and a normally closed pin.
- Filtered inputs
This block is composed by inputs (TTL level) that are filtered with a CLC filter for noise rejection.
- Direct inputs
This block is composed by inputs (TTL level) that are directly tied to acquisition logic.
- Optoisolated inputs
This block can be configured in two ways. The fist one is TTL level inputs (with no optoisolator) that you can connect to digital contacts; the second one is the optoisolated way. In this mode you must connect a reference voltage (to JP1 connector) up to 24V and the input will accept voltages from 0V up to the reference voltage.
- PIC16F628, radio frequency ricetransmitter and temperature sensor
This section encloses a DS1621 temperature sensor that can be directly controlled by FLEX-Bus or from PIC16F628. The PIC microcotntroller and radio frequency ricetransmitter are optional and they are mounted only in RF version of SX16B. This section allows you to wireless control every input and output of the board.
- External power connector, voltage regulator and leds
The external power source is required only in RF version or in stand alone version to let the board operate without master. In the base version the power supply is taken directly from FLEX-Bus. The three leds allows the control of board operations.
How I can use it?
The board can be used in three ways:
- Extension board for SX3000, SX15-Evo and SX18 boards: in this mode the SX16B is connected to one of the expanders of the master board. The microcontroller of the master board holds the control of all input and output lines. In this mode it is possible to connect several SX16B on the same cable.
- Wireless satellite: in this mode the on board PIC controls input and outputs and it send data to the master using the radio link. A single master board can control up to 10 SX16B board us4ing the multichannel feature of the RF transmitter (you can read more about this in the article Trasmissioni in Radiofrequenza facili con Easy Radio). The SX16B board in this mode is powered with an external 12 VCC voltage.
- Stand alone: the board is powered by the power connector with an external voltage of 12V CC. All inputs and outputs are controlled by the on board PIC. In this mode there is no master board.
Configuration example
A telecontrol system (Click the image to enlarge it)
In this system we have connected an SX15-Evo board (SX15-Evo - Even more power and flexibility!), that act as master, 2 SX16B and one FLEX-Analog board (FLEX-Analog: an analog acquisition board with flexibility in mind!).
In this way the resulting system can control 48 digital inputs, 12 rele outputs, 8 analog inputs with 8 bit resolution, 2 analog outputs with 8 bit resolution and a temperature sensor. The SX15-Evo, with is Ethernet and SMS/GSM/GPRS capabilities, completes a powerful and modular remote control system that you can build in a minute.
